How to Apply Iron-On Pearl/Rhinestone Patches to Garments: Easy Steps with Precautions

To apply iron-on patches with pearls or rhinestones onto garments, follow these simple steps while ensuring the safety of your garment and patches:

  1. Prepare the Garment: Make sure your garment is clean and freshly laundered, including new items.

  2. Set the Iron: Adjust your iron to the "COTTON" setting and let it heat up for about five minutes. Important: Do not use steam during the process.

  3. Iron the Area: Thoroughly iron the specific area on your garment where you intend to place the patch(es).

  4. Position the Patch: Place the patch on the desired spot, with the pearls or rhinestones facing up. To secure the patch(es) in place, you can add few simple stiches, use pins from the reverse side (being careful not to push them all the way through to avoid dislodging gems) or use heat resistance tape.

  5. Apply Heat: From the reverse side of the garment only (ironing from the top will damage the patch), use a slow circular motion and apply firm pressure for 30 seconds.

  6. Allow Cooling: Let the patch cool for one minute. If the edges can still be lifted, repeat step 5 until they remain securely in place.

  7. Reinforce with Sewing: For added durability, sew a few simple stitches after ironing the patch.

Important Notes:

  • Do not attempt to iron patches onto fabrics that cannot withstand heat, such as nylons, vinyls, or leathers with low melting points.
  • Aftercare: Handwash the garment with cold water only and do not use bleach or harsh detergents.
  • For a permanent fix, reinforce the patch with additional stitches from the reverse side, especially on thicker fabrics like denim that require extra support.

Additional Tips:

  • Patches with gems, hotfix, pearls, or rhinestones should only be ironed from the reverse side to prevent damage. Use a slow circular motion and apply firm pressure for 30 seconds. Release pressure when moving the iron to avoid shifting the patch.
  • Can patches be applied to fluffy garments? While flat surfaces are recommended, you can apply patches to fluffy garments. For better security, stitch down the patches with a sewing machine at a few spots.
  • You can apply patches to items other than garments such as gift boxes, notebooks, moodboards, gift cards and more by applying glue to the back of the patch.
